Proposed language test for migrants sparked controversy
The number of migrants who became citizens dropped significantly this year from the average 16,000 and 17,000 to just 12,887. Labor MP Graham Perrett blamed the Federal Government’s proposed stringent English test. This plan has generated a lot of controversy and it is feared that the plan may have deterred people from applying for citizenship.
